Sinusitis sufferers are understandably eager to find effective, long-lasting relief from their uncomfortable condition. Balloon Sinuplasty may be able to provide that solution.
Can Balloon Sinuplasty Help Relieve Sinusitis Pain?
Balloon Sinuplasty, a breakthrough in endoscopic sinus surgery, is both safe and less invasive than traditional surgery and is proven effective with fast recovery.
In contrast to traditional sinus surgery, a Balloon Sinuplasty does not require cutting or removal of bone and tissue. Instead, a small, flexible, balloon catheter is inserted into the inflamed sinus and inflated to expand the sinus opening. Saline is then sprayed into the inflamed sinus to flush out the pus and mucus that has built up. The system is removed and the sinuses remain open. The inflated balloon essentially restructures and widens the walls of the sinus passageways, while keeping the integrity of the sinus lining.
The effectiveness and recovery time of Balloon Sinuplasty are also huge advantages of this approach to treating chronic sinusitis. In a study that tracked patients for two years following their Balloon Sinuplasty Sinus Surgery in the OR, most chronic sinusitis patients reported clinically meaningful improvement in sinus symptoms and quality of life. And while recovery varies by patient, in a study of in-office balloon dilation, most patients returned to work and normal activity within 2 days.
At Atlantic ENT Associates, we offer Balloon Sinuplasty as an awake procedure under local anesthesia and take numerous steps to ensure patient comfort including low ambient light and music through headphones. Patients are numbed for the procedure with a series of gentle nose sprays and cotton sheets soaked with anesthesia placed into the nose, followed by tiny injections of anesthesia to minimize further discomfort. We avoid narcotics and sedatives for our patients, reducing the potential for complications during and after the procedure.
An in-office procedure also means avoiding the risks of general anesthesia and the costs associated with a hospital or surgery center.
